Soda Can-Snow Man DIY!

With Christmas break just around the corner, it's the perfect time to schedule a little Jolly in your day! I found myself wanting to create something joyful and simple after Thanksgiving. I needed to break away from work, the computer, news, and spend time with my 11 year daughter on something other than 6th grade math and the pile of homework that awaits us every night after dinner.

I started the experience with a very theatrical serenade of Frozen's, 'Do You Want To Build A Snowman?'. With exaggerated gestures and pronunciation, my daughter let it be known that I was embarrassing.... but my all-in and full hearted attempt to spend time with her eventually led to a smile, laugh, and "Okay".

What You'll Need:

  • Soda or Beer Cans - Two cans are needed for each snowman

  • Glue Gun

  • Marker

  • Twig from yard for arms (Optional)

  • Buttons (Optional)

  • Paint- I used Chalk Paint but Acrylic or house paint would work

  • Foam paint brush

  • Sock, Scarf, Microfiber Cloth, anything on hand.

I picked up the blue scarf I used at the Dollar Tree as well as a Micro Fiber cloth in the car section of Dollar Tree.

Step One:

Apply two coats of paint or until you can't see the metal any longer. Let them dry.

Step Two

Apply a healthy layer of super glue to the inside rim of one can and stack the second can on top. Allow it to dry.

I did notice that the chalk paint was prone to crack in some places but I thought it provided a little natural character and I covered the most noticeable area with a scarf.

Step Three

Apply your stocking caps & scarves

For the first snowman I cut the end off of a scarf, wrapped it around the top and hot glued it in place. I then cut off a tassel from the scarf and used it to synch the loose tassels on top to create a cute bunch. You could also use a sock or any other material you have on hand for the hat.

To create the 2nd Santa inspired hat, I chose this Micro Cloth from the Dollar Tree, which provided the perfect soft and cozy texture. I cut a triangle from the cloth and carefully practiced rolling it on the head of my snowman (top can) until I got the desired look, I then secured it in place with the glue gun.

To make them a cohesive pair, I also applied opposite trim (& tassel pieces) to the brim of each snowman's hat and gave each a matching scarf.

Step Four: Apply their cute little arms & buttons with hot glue.

I grabbed these twigs from my yard and applied a lot of glue to support and keep the arms in place. I also decided to not apply arms to my white snowman as I wanted them to be side by side and not bump into each other.

Step Five: Eyes & Noses!

I chose to use one of my yard twigs to make the noses. The trick was cutting a small piece of twig and bending into the shape with out breaking it completely at the edges. I used super glue to secure the shape as well as to apply to the can. You can totally draw or paint a orange nose if that is best for you. I then used a sharpie to draw on eyes.

I figured this DIY out as I went and overall think they turned out pretty great. My daughter said a few times that they looked like we bought them from a store.

I hope this whimsical DIY brings joy to your household. Please post your DIY on our Facebook page if you try it!
